A high-speed granulator is a size reduction machine. It uses a rotating rotor equipped with knives to chop, shear, and impact materials into smaller, uniform particles (granules or flakes). The high rotational speed (typically 500 - 3,000 RPM) is key to its efficiency.

The application of wet granulation is a cornerstone of modern manufacturing, particularly in pharmaceuticals. It is an essential process for transforming problematic, non-flowing powders into a physically superior granulate that is reliable, safe, and efficient to process into high-quality final products like tablets, capsules, and food ingredients. While it is a more complex and expensive method than dry granulation or direct compression, its benefits in product quality and process reliability make it indispensable.

The application of a high-speed granulator follows a tightly controlled sequence:

1. Loading and Dry Mixing:

The powder blend (raw materials+ excipients like diluents, disintegrants) is loaded into the sealed bowl.
The impeller (main blade at the bottom) rotates at a low to moderate speed, creating a vortex for several minutes to achieve a perfectly homogeneous dry mix.
2. Binder Addition (Wetting):

The granulating liquid (e.g., water, ethanol, or a binder solution like PVP or HPMC) is added.
Addition is typically done via a peristaltic pump and spray nozzle to ensure even distribution throughout the powder bed.
The impeller speed is often kept moderate during this phase.
3. Wet Massing (The High-Speed Phase):

This is the core granulation step. The impeller speed is significantly increased.
Application of Mechanical Energy: The high-speed impeller shears and consolidates the wetted mass, forcing particles to collide and coalesce into dense, spherical granules.
Chopper Action: The chopper (a small, fast blade on the side of the bowl) operates at high speed throughout this stage to break down larger agglomerates and ensure a uniform granule size.
The end-point of this wet massing is critical and is often determined by amperage (current load) on the impeller motor or by torque measurement, indicating the desired granule consistency has been reached.
4. Discharge:

Once granulation is complete, the wet granules are discharged, often through a bottom valve, for the next step: drying (typically in a Fluid Bed Dryer).
5. Milling (Sizing):

After drying, the granules are passed through a mill (e.g., an oscillating granulator) to break any loose agglomerates and achieve the final, precise particle size distribution.
